Standard Schnauzers make wonderful companions. They are a healthy, robust and loyal breed. They do well with children and other pets when socialized at a young age. Standard Schnauzers are NOT a "large" miniature schnauzer. They are a completely different breed, and are not for everyone. Standard Schnauzers are a very versatile, medium sized dog. They are very intelligent and learn quickly. Going from lazy walks around the park, hiking in the hills or herding in the fields to intense agility/ obedience trials and competitive show rings... this breed nevers misses a beat. They are also just the right size to sleep at the end of your bed, jump in the car, or throw in the bathtub when neccessary! The Standard's serious expression and deep bark when alert can be intimidating to strangers, and you will always know when someone is approaching your home. Standard Schnauzers, who are highly intelligent, can also be stubborn. Early obedience training is highly suggested! Your puppy will learn manners and you will learn to communicate with your new family member. This consistant effort in the beginning is essential if both you and your dog are to share a thoroughly enjoyable life together for the next 12-15 years. Standard schnauzers need to be groomed. The breed does not have a real "doggy" odor. Legs and beards are all that typically needs to be be washed out in between grooming sessions. They should be brushed weekly, and shaved or hand stripped every 6-8 weeks to keep up the schnauzery appearance. Standard Schnauzers are not easy to find. This is because reputable breeders carefully screen their breeding stock for health and temperment. Puppy buyers are also carefully screened. Puppies sold as companions come with a neuter/spay agreement. Good breeders also have done health testing on their breeding dogs, usually OFA hips, and eyes are CERF'd. Most Standard Schnauzer breeders want to find a good match for their dogs. Many breeders will become your mentor and friend. |
